Abstract
The acceptability of the semigraphical method as a substitute for the algebraic method of calculating the index of alveolar ventilation (IAV), as proposed by Lichtneckert, was confirmed by clinical data from 302 tests on 151 subjects. It was noted that variability within the last portion of the washout (region of 5 to 2 percent) of the nitrogen (7727379) multiple breath test significantly affected the IAV value, but this effect did not invalidate the proposed method.
