NIOSH and the coal mine industry.

A review is presented of the studies in progress at the NIOSH Appalachian Laboratory for Occupational Respiratory Diseases, seeking to identify the mechanism involved in the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Data are given regarding medical examinations required by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, prevalence of pneumoconiosis in various States, and evaluation of personal dust monitors and respirators.
