In vitro hydrolase and phagocytic activities of alveolar macrophages.

Estimation of the uptake potential of rabbit alveolar macrophages is performed in-vitro using P-32 labeled bacteria, with the lytic potential of the same cells prior to phagocytosis estimated from the activity of six lysosomal hydrolase enzymes and related to macrophages as a means for comparison with uptake activities. Data are presented on mean recovery of alveolar macrophages and total mean recovery of cells. Bacterial uptake is decreased when carbon- dioxide (124389) or ozone (10028156)-enriched air are used as the gas phases.
