Modern analytical methods being used to characterize environmental exposures in a study of the asbestos industry are described, including microsieving, digestion procedures, column chromatography, x-ray diffraction, low-temperature ashing, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, x-ray diffractometry, electron microprobe, and neutron activation analysis. Types of samples include bulk asbestos materials, airborne fibers and dusts, settled dusts, and finished products containing asbestos.
