Personal ear protection evaluation - present and future.
Am Ind Hyg Assoc J 1971 Nov; 32(11):753-756
Critical evaluation of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Method for the measurement of the Real-Ear Attenuation of Ear Protectors at Threshold. The current method is described as expensive and time-consuming. The amount of protection determined with this method is considered likely to be misleading in many cases. This standard is restricted to the evaluation of ear protector attenuation and has no specifications on other ear protector characteristics such as durability, toxicity, and sizing. The ANSI S-52 Writing Group is revising the attenuation measurement standard to include both subjective and physical methods for evaluating ear protectors. Two other standard writing groups - ANSI Z-137, and IEEE 30.10 are preparing new standards which should provide much more complete and accurate evaluation procedures and specifications.
