Results of investigation of the effects of cigarette smoking on uranium miners show that cigarette smoking adds to loss of pulmonary function associated with aging and exposures to dust and radiation. Little or no influence of smoking on histological type of lung cancer is found, but smoking does reduce the induction-latent period of cancer. Radiation exposure is determined to be a significant factor in the development of lung cancer as incidence of lung cancer increases with increasing radiation exposure among groups with similar smoking habits.
