Coronavirus Disease-2019

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (named “coronavirus disease 2019” or “COVID-19”) that was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China and which continues to expand. This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and CDC will provide updated information as it becomes available, in addition to updated guidance, on the CDC website. The purpose of this page is to highlight resources available for the protection of workers.

  • Industry-Specific Resources
    Construction workers may be at risk for exposure to the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). CDC has published a new fact sheet that provides steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through everyday actions such as maintaining distance of 6 feet from others, proper hand hygiene, and routinely cleaning frequently touched surfaces.


The following interim guidance is for: businesses and employers, public health authorities, and administrators of childcare programs and K-12 schools to help prevent exposures and spread of COVID-19.

Healthcare Settings

Infection prevention and control procedures follow the hierarchy of controls approach. This approach includes engineering controls, administrative controls (or changes in work practices), and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which are all necessary to prevent infections from spreading.

The interim infection prevention and control recommendations linked immediately below are intended only for: healthcare settings, home care, emergency medical services systems and 911 call centers, law enforcement personnel, and those responsible for the collection and submission of postmortem specimens from deceased persons.


General and specific biosafety guidelines for workers handling COVID-19 specimens are provided in the interim guidance, listed below.


Interim recommendations for the commercial airline industry including crew on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are provided below. Also, provided is interim guidance on how to prevent, detect, and manage COVID-19 infections for ships originating from, or stopping in, the United States.

Personal Protective Equipment Resources

Healthcare personnel should refer to interim infection prevention and control recommendations and guidance for caring for patients with confirmed or possible COVID-19  for additional guidance related to PPE recommendations.
