Transition of COVID-19 Hospital Reporting

Updated February 10, 2023

Important Update

December 15, 2022 will be the first day that COVID-19 hospital data should be reported to NHSN.

Application issues the team is currently working to address:

  • The NHSN team is working to update the record indicators and warning messages associated with the PPE fields required weekly on Wednesdays for hospital COVID-19 data submission. The application is currently not showing warnings or incomplete record indicators if the weekly required values are not entered on Wednesdays.
  • Please check to ensure values for the PPE fields are included in any Wednesday submission. The NHSN team anticipates the warnings and record indicators will be updated by late January 2023.

Previous NHSN COVID-19 Hospital Module fixes can be viewed here.

Thank you for your partnership, and please continue to share any feedback with NHSN at NHSN@cdc.gov.

The National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) assumed responsibility for collection of COVID-19 hospital data on Thursday, December 15, 2022.  COVID-19 hospital data should be reported to NHSN as of December 15, 2022.

This page will be updated frequently with information about submission of hospital COVID-19 data to NHSN. Data will continue to be posted publicly on HHS Protect and COVID Data Tracker. Facility and Group-level users can view their own data within the NHSN platform.

Reporting guidance for COVID-19 hospital data is available here.

This information does not apply to Long-term Care Facilities or Dialysis Facilities. It also does not impact Healthcare Personnel (HCP) COVID-19 Vaccination.

Important Information

  • If facilities are experiencing technical challenges in reporting due to the transition, such as NHSN access issues, unexpected validation errors causing data to be rejected, or other technical issues related to accessing and reporting in NHSN, please report these challenges by emailing NHSN@cdc.gov with the subject “hospital COVID-19 compliance.”
  • There are no significant changes to the questions or to the reporting cadence. The only minor change is that the NHSN orgID now serves as the facility identifier.
  • Reporting processes remain the same.
  • Reporting capabilities for webform interface, CSV upload (for both individual facility and multiple facilities), and API are available in NHSN.
  • Historical data submitted via TeleTracking is not available within NHSN at this time but will be available in the future.
  • Please follow guidance from your jurisdiction to ensure your facility is meeting any state, tribal, local, or territorial requirements.

NHSN COVID-19 Hospital Module Fixes

Previously identified issues that have been fixed in the NHSN COVID-19 hospital module:

  • Adjusting fields with Yes or No answers to accept values of both “YES” and “Y”; “NO” and “N”
  • Adjusting fields with Facility or System answers to accept values of both “FACILITY” or “FAC”; “SYSTEM” or “SYS” (these are federally inactive fields)
  • Adjusting “Days on Hand Supply” answers to accept values of both “>30 days” and “> 30 days” (one has a space, one doesn’t)
  • Issues/clarifications with some optional and required fields:
    • Correcting optional and/or inactive fields are currently triggering incorrect warnings
    • Adjusting typo on influenza fields (remove word optional)
    • Adjusting typo on pediatric fields (remove word optional)
    • Adding note to legacy therapeutics fields indicating they will be moved to the inactive section in the December release
    • Adding note to vaccination fields indicating they will be moved to the inactive section in the December release
    • Adjusting web-form display issues with fields 30c, f, g, and h
  • Issue in the Hospital COVID-19 module related to question 17a. Previous Day’s adult admissions with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and breakdown by age bracket. Calculations for the “Unknown” age bracket field were excluding the values entered in the “70-79” age bracket field, leading to incorrect values displayed in the “Unknown” field when data was submitted. The calculation was corrected downstream prior to use in HHS Protect products and healthdata.gov datasets.
