Task 2: Locate & Download Feasibility Files and Documentation: Medicare

There are three items you will need to download:

• Documentation
• Public-use ASCII data files
• Sample SAS Program 

Step 1: Locate files and documentation

• From the NCHS homepage, shown here on the right, click the Data Linkage link in the left navigation menu.
• On the NCHS Data Linkage Activities page, click the Medicare Enrollment and Claims data (CMS) link.
• Under the Medicare Enrollment and Claims data (CMS) link on the left navigation menu, click on NCHS-CMS Medicare Feasibility Study Files.

Step 2: Documentation

• Click the Documentation link to open it or save it to your computer.

Step 3: Public-use ASCII data files

• Click the Public-use ASCII data files link and open it. (Because of the layout of the tutorial, you may need to RIGHT-CLICK the link and select "Open in New Window" to open this link.)
• Right click on the feasibility file(s) needed for your analysis by the appropriate survey and year to save it to your computer.

Step 4: Sample SAS program

• Click the Sample SAS Program link and open it.
• Copy the text into a SAS editor and save.
