Position and organization

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), located in Hyattsville, Maryland, is seeking a Senior Service Fellow (Nutritional Epidemiologist) in the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (DHANES). As the nation’s principal health statistics agency, NCHS’ mission is to provide statistical information to guide actions and policies to improve the health of the American people.

NCHS conducts the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a nationally representative survey of the U.S. population. The survey is unique in combining interviews, including 24-hour dietary recalls, and health examinations. Visit the NHANES website for more information.

Position overview

As a member of DHANES’ Analysis Branch, the Service Fellow will conduct analyses with NHANES nutrition-related data (for example, usual dietary intake analysis). In collaboration with other researchers within and outside of NCHS, the fellow will plan and implement high-quality research on nutrition and dietary topics after selecting appropriate statistical and epidemiologic methods. The fellow will prepare comprehensive reports of study results for NCHS and scientific publication and present research activities at professional conferences and meetings. In addition, the fellow will contribute to the division by conducting ad hoc analyses, acting as point person for the NHANES online tutorial, and answering public inquiries. The work requires knowledge of dietary data analysis including familiarity with the National Cancer Institute usual intake macros.

Qualifications

The position is open to all U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents with a work authorization. (Applicants are responsible for obtaining the necessary work authorization.) Applicants must have successfully completed a Ph.D. in nutrition or a related field (for example, epidemiology). Experience and coursework in nutrition are essential, and knowledge of complex surveys is desirable. Strong skills in SAS, STATA, SUDAAN, R, or other statistical software for analyzing complex data are expected. Strong speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills are highly desirable.
