Graphics Highlighting Most Current New HIV Infection Data Among Hispanics/Latinos
This chart reflects the estimated number of new HIV infections among Hispanics broken down by transmission category. Of the 9,400 new HIV infections that occurred among Hispanics in 2009, 64% were among men who have sex with men (MSM), 25% were among heterosexuals (18% female; 7% male); 10% were among injection drug users (IDU) (6% male; 4% female); and 2% were among MSM/IDU.

Although the number of new infections among Latinos has been lower than that of whites and blacks, Latinos bear a disproportionate burden of the HIV epidemic. Hispanics represent approximately 16 percent of the U.S. population and the latest CDC estimates show that they account for an estimated 20 percent of new infections (9,400 infections).



This graph shows that in the US in 2009 the rate of new HIV infections among black males was 103.9 cases per 100,000 population, the rate for Hispanic males was 39.9 cases per 100,000 population, and the rate for white males was 15.9 cases per 100,000 population. The rate among black females was 39.7 cases per 100,000 population, the rate for Hispanic females was 11.8 cases per 100,000 population, and the rate among white women was 2.6 cases per 100,000 population.

Men account for more than three-quarters (79 percent) of new infections among Hispanics. Women account for 21 percent. The rate of new HIV infections among Hispanic men is almost three times that among white men, with gay and bisexual men particularly affected. The rate of new HIV infections among Hispanic women is more than four times that of white women.
