CDC Vector-Borne Disease Laboratory Assistance Available

Dear state health department and jurisdictional laboratory partners:

We understand that many of you are likely to be or currently are overwhelmed with SARS-CoV-2 testing for the foreseeable future. In order to help you during this challenging time, CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD) plans to offer the following testing of human clinical samples for vector-borne diseases this season. Samples may be forwarded from the state health department or jurisdictional laboratory partner to the CDC.

Arboviral Diseases

Non-dengue arboviral disease testing

DVBD’s Arboviral Disease Branch offers the following laboratory testing support, (please use submission form 50.34 [PDF – 1 page]. Please include symptom onset date, collection date, and pertinent travel history required). Prior arboviral disease testing is not required for submission.

  • IgM and nucleic acid testing for non-WNV domestic arboviral pathogens (e.g. EEE, POW, LAC, SLE, CTF, Heartland and Bourbon viruses)
  • IgM testing for West Nile virus (WNV) that is not already being conducted by commercial partners. NOTE: please continue to utilize commercial partnerships whenever possible for WNV testing.
  • Confirmatory testing
  • Additional testing on case-by-case basis
  • More information on submitting specimens or contact a staff member directly

Proficiency testing

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, DVBD has suspended our annual proficiency testing. However, upon request, assembled validation panels will be made available. If your laboratory needs validation panels, please email us directly, ArboPanelSubmission@cdc.gov

Dengue testing

DVBD’s Dengue Branch offers the following laboratory testing support, (please use submission form 50.34 pdf icon[PDF – 1 page]. Please include symptom onset date, collection date, and pertinent travel history required):

  • IgM and nucleic acid testing for dengue*
  • Confirmatory testing
  • Additional testing on a case-by-case basis

*If you wish to send specimens from a dengue outbreak, please consult with the Dengue Branch Laboratory regarding the quantity and types of specimens prior to submission.

Rickettsial disease and Q fever testing
