HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS

Return to Play Considerations

Heat Stroke

Warning! Physiologic changes (e.g., changes in muscles, heart, brain, liver, and kidneys) might occur after an episode of heat stroke.

Changes such as lowered heat tolerance could be temporary or permanent. The athlete's physician and the medical staff should administer a careful return-to-play strategy.

Physician clearance is necessary before returning to any type of exercise. Athletes should avoid all physical activity until all symptoms are gone and all laboratory tests are normal.

The severity of the incident should determine the length of recovery time.

Return to play should be gradual to regain peak fitness and acclimatization and should be supervised by a doctor or medical staff.

The athlete's physician should determine the type and length of exercise.
