Heat Stroke

 

Heat stroke is the most serious HRI—it is life threatening. It occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature.

 

         Body temperature rises rapidly

         Sweat process fails

         Body is unable to cool down

Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10-15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided.

Warning signs of heat stroke vary but may include
 

         An extremely high body temperature (104°F or above, rectally*)

         Red, hot, and dry or moist skin

         Rapid, strong pulse

         Throbbing headache

         Dizziness

         Nausea

         Confusion

         Unconsciousness

Youth (6-13) Tips

If you suspect heat stroke, seek medical attention immediately!

*Temperature taken rectally is the most accurate method.
