In Scenario Three we learned about a high school football player who experienced heat stroke.
Heat stroke is the most serious HRI and occurs when the body cannot control its temperature.
We learned the warning signs of heat stroke
include
An extremely high body temperature (104°F or above, rectally*)
Red, hot, and dry or moist skin
Rapid, strong pulse
Throbbing headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Confusion
Unconsciousness
We also learned how to treat possible heat stroke in an athlete.
Have someone call for immediate medical assistance while you begin cooling the sick person. Response time will be critical.
Get the sick person to a shady area.
Remove equipment and clothing.
Cool the person rapidly (immerse in ice
water, apply ice packs, give cool showers,
etc.)
Give sips of cool water if the person is
alert. Do not give the person alcohol to
drink.
The person should be transported to the hospital for observation even if all treatment on the field is successful.
