HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS

Scenario Three Review

We also learned how to treat possible heat stroke in an athlete.

Have someone call for immediate medical assistance while you begin cooling the sick person. Response time will be critical.

Get the sick person to a shady area.

         Remove equipment and clothing.

Cool the person rapidly (immerse in ice water, apply ice packs, give cool showers, etc.)

Give sips of cool water if the person is alert. Do not give the person alcohol to drink.

The person should be transported to the hospital for observation even if all treatment on the field is successful.

*Temperature taken rectally is the most accurate method.
