California SCDC Data, 2010: Map and Figures

The SCDC program monitors and reports on the health of people with sickle cell disease (SCD) over time. The maps and figures below represent 2010 data on number of patients, hospitalizations, and emergency department (ED) visits for SCD in California (CA). Click below each map or graph to download aggregate data.
The patients included in these data met at least one of the following criteria:
- Born in 2010 and reported by the state newborn screening program with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD
- Born prior to 2010 and reported by the state newborn screening program with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD AND had evidence of healthcare utilization* in 2010
- Received care at one of the state’s hemoglobinopathy specialty treatment centers AND received care 1) at the center during 2010; or 2) had evidence of healthcare utilization* during 2010 AND a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of SCD. The specialty treatment centers included in the SCDC program are:
- University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
- Valley Children’s Hospital
- UC Davis Medical Center
- Loma Linda Medical Center
- Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California (community-based organization)
- Three or more healthcare visits (hospital, emergency department, or outpatient) with an SCD ICD-9-CM (thru September 30, 2015) or ICD-10-CM (after October 1, 2015) code over any 5-year period between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2016 AND indication of healthcare utilization* 1) during 2010; or 2) before and after 2010
*hospital discharge, emergency department, or Medicaid claims
Key Terms
- Age: the patient’s age on December 31, 2010
- Hospital utilization: direct hospital admissions, as well as hospital admissions that originated in the ED
- 30-day hospital readmissions: hospital or ED admission within 30 days of discharge from the initial hospital admission
- ED visits: ED visits that resulted in a release after treatment
- 30-day ED readmissions: hospital or ED admission within 30 days of discharge from the initial ED visit
