California SCDC Data, 2005: Map and Figures

The SCDC program monitors and reports on the health of people with sickle cell disease (SCD) over time. The map and figures below represent 2005 data on number of patients, hospitalizations, and emergency department (ED) visits for SCD in California (CA). Click below each map or figure to download data.
The patients included in these data met at least one of the following criteria:
- Born in 2005 and reported by the state newborn screening program with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD
- Received care at one of the state’s hemoglobinopathy specialty treatment centers during 2004-2008 and had a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of SCD. The specialty treatment centers were:
- Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
- University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
- Three or more healthcare visits (outpatient, hospital admission, ED visit) with an SCD ICD-9-CM code between January 1, 2004-December 31, 2008
Key Terms
- Age: the patient’s age on December 31, 2005
- Hospital admissions: direct hospital admissions and hospital admissions that originated in the ED
- 30-day hospital readmissions: hospital or ED admission within 30 days of discharge from the initial hospital admission
- ED visits: ED visits that resulted in a release after treatment
- 30-day ED readmissions: hospital or ED admission within 30 days of discharge from the initial ED visit
