Jewel Mullen, MD, MPH, MPA
OMHHE recognizes Jewel Mullen, MD, MPH, MPA as OMHHE Spring 2020 Health Equity Champion! Dr. Mullen serves as the Associate Dean for Health Equity at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School and as an associate professor in the school’s population health and internal medicine departments. She is responsible for assuring that health equity is embedded across the school’s educational, clinical, research, and community impact pillars. She also serves as Director of Health Equity at Ascension Seton. Mullen previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health. She is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in building effective community-based chronic disease prevention programs and for her commitment to improving individual and population health by strengthening coordination between community, public health and health care systems. Mullen serves on the Editorial Board of CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. A former member of the Advisory Committee to the CDC Director and its subcommittee on health disparities, Mullen also chaired CDC’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection and Control Federal Advisory Committee. Her numerous awards include the Jacobi Medallion, the highest award bestowed by Mount Sinai recognizing distinguished achievement in medicine and the Association of Yale Alumni in Public Health Winslow Centennial Honor Roll for Excellence and Service.
Dr. Mullen is a strong and tireless advocate for health equity and uses her sphere of influence to create and sustain national, state and local systems, strategies and policies for improving population health. We congratulate Dr. Mullen on her many achievements and applaud her leadership in advancing health equity.
