Non-Infectious Meningitis

Diseases due to pathogens that spread between people, called infectious diseases, are not the only things that can cause meningitis. This page describes some of the things that can cause meningitis that do not spread from one person to another (non-infectious).

Causes

Causes of non–infectious meningitis include:

  • Cancers
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus)
  • Certain medicines
  • Head injury
  • Brain surgery

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms could include the following:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Photophobia (eyes being more sensitive to light)
  • Altered mental status (confusion)
