2.3 Data Selection Detail Level
WISQARS Cost of Injury Reports allows selection of data at many different levels of detail with respect to injury intent/mechanism and body region/nature of injury. When requesting cost estimates under the intent by mechanism classification scheme (see Section 2.2), the categories available for specifying injury intent are fixed but the categories available for specifying injury mechanism will vary depending on the level of detail requested. When requesting cost estimates under the body region by nature of injury classification scheme (see Section 2.2), the categories available for specifying nature of injury are fixed but the categories available for specifying body region will vary depending on the level of detail requested.
When the intent by mechanism classification scheme has been selected, there will be either three or four levels of detail available for specifying the mechanism of injury (depending on whether the intended report is for injury-related deaths or for injury-related hospitalizations/emergency department visits). The desired level of detail is selected by clicking on the appropriate radio button; depending on the level selected different “check boxes” are unlocked in the section of the query screen where injury mechanisms are displayed. Clicking on the radio button labeled mechanism level 1 indicates that data are to be selected for all mechanisms combined (the highest level of aggregation for mechanism of injury); the all mechanisms of injury check box will be unlocked and automatically checked. Clicking on the radio button labeled mechanism level 2 indicates that data are to be selected according to major injury mechanism categories (for example, fall or poisoning); the check boxes corresponding to the major injury mechanisms will be unlocked and available for selection (one or more may then be checked). Requesting a greater level of detail will unlock check boxes that allow selection of injury mechanism categories that are further disaggregated.
When the body region by nature of injury classification scheme has been selected, there will be either three or four levels of detail available for specifying the affected body region (depending on whether the intended report is for injury-related deaths or for injury-related hospitalizations/emergency department visits). The desired level of detail is selected by clicking on the appropriate radio button; depending on the level selected different check boxes are unlocked in the section of the query screen where body regions are displayed. Clicking on the radio button labeled body region level 1 indicates that data are to be selected for all body regions combined (the highest level of aggregation for body region); the all body regions check box will be unlocked and automatically checked. Clicking on the radio button labeled body region level 2 indicates that data are to be selected according to major body region categories (for example, head & neck or extremities); the check boxes corresponding to the major body regions will be unlocked and available for selection (one or more may then be checked). Requesting a greater level of detail will unlock check boxes that allow selection of body region categories that are further disaggregated.
