Captain (CAPT) Joshua Schier, MD, MPH, is a senior medical officer and subject matter expert in medical toxicology for various activities with the Division of Overdose Prevention (DOP) at CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. He serves as a strategy lead for CDC’s Overdose Data to Action Program, overseeing activities related to linking overdose patients to care and supporting providers and health systems across 66 states, counties, and metropolitan areas. In addition, he is the CDC/ATSDR site director for the joint Emory/CDC Medical Toxicology Fellowship, which trains physicians in the sub-specialty of medical toxicology. He served two terms as one of eight physicians on the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s Medical Toxicology Sub-Board and was chair of the sub-board during his last term.

Prior to joining NCIPC, CAPT Schier was the lead of the Toxicology Team in CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health, where he oversaw national surveillance activities involving the National Poison Data System, the Emory/CDC Medical Toxicology Fellowship, radiation disaster emergency preparedness work, and consultation and deployments on suspected and known (national and international) mass poisonings and toxicological health threats.

As the ninth chief medical officer for the USPHS Commissioned Corps (Corps), CAPT Schier provides leadership and direction for more than 600 active duty Corps medical officers and advises the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health and Human Services on recruitment, assignment, deployment, retention, and career development of Corps physicians.

CAPT Schier received his BS degree in biology from Widener University (Chester, PA) and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA). He completed an emergency medicine residency at Cooper University Hospital (Camden, NJ), followed by a fellowship in medical toxicology at Bellevue Medical Center/New York University (New York City, NY). He earned a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology from Emory Rollins School of Public Health (Atlanta, GA).
