CE06-605: Unintentional Injury and Violence Prevention and Control Initiatives Related to the World Health Organization (WHO)
Initial Fiscal Year: 2006
FOA Number: CE06-605
FOA Title: Unintentional Injury and Violence Prevention and Control Initiatives Related to the World Health Organization (WHO)
The World Report on Violence and Health estimated that in 2000, violence caused 1.6 million deaths worldwide including 815,000 from suicide, 520,000 from homicide, and 310,000 from war-related inquiries. In addition, 20% of women and 5-10% of men have suffered sexual abuse as children. The World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention (2004) reported 1.2 million road traffic injury deaths occur annually and 30-50 million sustain injuries, with many suffering permanent disabilities. The WHO Report on Prehospital Trauma Care Systems (2005) made clear that the capacity to provide the prompt provision of emergency care and rapid movement of injured victims from the scene of injury to a health-care facility does not exist in many parts of the world. In many middle and low-income countries, the burden of traffic-related injuries represent between 30 and 86% of all trauma admissions.
The purpose of the program is to prevent and control violence and unintentional injuries by the following activities: develop indicators and surveillance systems to monitor injuries and violence, conduct training and education, implement and evaluate comprehensive prevention and control strategies, and disseminate information and provide expertise to prevent and control unintentional injuries and violence.
