CDC Global HIV and TB Participation at IAS 2023
The 12th IAS Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2023) will take place in Brisbane, Australia and virtually from July 23 – 26, 2023. This meeting is one of the world’s most influential forums for sharing HIV research and its application in the real world.
IAS 2023 will bring together scientists and influencers from around the world, including subject matter experts from CDC’s Division of Global HIV & TB to build momentum around latest developments in HIV-related research. CDC leaders, technical experts, and partners will present oral, poster, and late breaking abstracts highlighting their latest work to accelerate progress toward ending HIV.
CDC Global Research at IAS 2023
Several of the studies highlight how CDC is addressing the critical need to reach populations that continue to be left behind, such as adolescent girls and young women and key populations which include men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, female sex workers, and incarcerated populations. Studies include:
- A CDC analysis that shows the CDC- and PEPFAR-supported Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) program is having a significant impact in reducing new HIV infections in 3 high burden districts in Malawi.
- An analysis of PEPFAR (MER) data from 2019 – 2022 that revealed adaptations CDC made to key HIV programs during the COVID pandemic, such as HIV self-testing, telemedicine, and community-based service delivery led to a substantial boost in uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)–a key HIV prevention tool–among key populations in 30 countries.
- Another study highlights an HIV treatment program for female sex workers (FSW) that was led by members of this community from 2020 – 2022 — and revealed high rates of treatment adherence and viral suppression. The study underscored that engaging with the same communities we aim to reach to deliver HIV services, can dramatically improve outcomes.
At IAS 2023, DGHT experts will also present research on CDC’s data-driven approaches to identify and close gaps that prevent too many from accessing lifesaving HIV treatment and prevention services. Analyses include:
- A study on recent HIV infection (acquired within the past 12 months) in Malawi which identified several potential barriers to accessing HIV testing and prevention services in geographic areas experiencing ongoing HIV transmission.
- Another CDC analysis shows how facilities in Kenya are responding to the unique treatment needs of PLHIV using data from case-based surveillance (CBS) – a system that provides timely HIV prevention, testing, and treatment data at the individual level.

Studies include:
- A CDC analysis that found HIV diagnoses have declined dramatically in three high-burden districts in Malawi implementing the PEPFAR DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe) program.
- An analysis of PEPFAR (MER) data from 2019 – 2022 that indicate adaptations CDC made to key HIV programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as HIV self-testing, telemedicine, and community-based service delivery has contributed to a substantial boost in uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)–a key HIV prevention tool–among key populations in 30 countries.

At IAS 2023, DGHT experts will also present key findings around CDC’s data-driven approaches to identify and close gaps that prevent too many from accessing lifesaving HIV treatment and prevention services. Analyses include:
