Women Should Begin HIV Treatment Before Pregnancy


A new CDC study reveals that children born to mothers who start HIV treatment before becoming pregnant have healthier outcomes. Delaying treatment increases the odds of a mother transmitting HIV to her child. If a woman becomes pregnant before starting treatment, she should begin as soon as she can after conception. Authors of the study recommend expanding HIV testing and treatment for all women who may become pregnant.

Thembi’s Story: Hope in the Epicenter of the Epidemic


Less than a decade ago, Eswatini had the highest HIV incidence rate in the world. In just five years the country was able to cut the rate of new HIV infections by nearly half, a dramatic transformation that shows how a country that was on the brink of extinction can achieve success in preventing HIV. Thembi’s story, from her harrowing HIV diagnosis to full recovery, is similar to the story of the country she calls home, one of hope and resilience that serves as a beacon for countless others.
