Congressional Leaders, Experts Shine a Light on CDC’s Critical Role in Ending Global HIV and TB
On Wednesday May 15th, Senators Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH), joined the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), UNAIDS, and RESULTS to host a panel discussion on Capitol Hill, highlighting the impact of CDC’s global HIV and TB efforts as part of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The event–“CDC’s Critical Role in Ending Global HIV and TB”–brought together leaders and experts in HIV and TB to discuss emerging issues confronting the global response and CDC’s unique role in transforming these epidemics. Speakers included Dr. Angelii Achrekar, Acting Principal Deputy Coordinator of the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator, Dr. Hank Tomlinson, Director of CDC’s Division of Global HIV & TB, Charles Lyons, CEO/President of EGPAF, Regan Hofmann, Acting Director of UNAIDS, and Dr. Joanne Carter, Executive Director of RESULTS. The event also included a CDC exhibit by renowned photographer Thom Pierce, showcasing images and stories from the frontlines of CDC’s global response–at the epicenter of these epidemics. Survey Shows Smaller HIV Epidemic in Nigeria


The Government of Nigeria, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, CDC’s Division of Global HIV & TB, and the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine released new data from the Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS), one of the largest population-based HIV/AIDS household surveys ever conducted. NAIIS measured HIV prevalence and viral load suppression. According to the survey’s results, the HIV prevalence in Nigeria was lower than previously thought.

Fighting TB Abroad. Keeping Us Safe at Home


Despite being preventable and curable, TB is the world’s top infectious disease killer, claiming 1.6 million lives of the 10 million people who became ill with TB disease in 2017. TB is an airborne disease that respects no borders, making the CDC Global TB program integral to ending TB abroad and at home.
