Faces from the Frontlines

Over a 10-day period, renowned photographer Thom Pierce traveled with colleagues from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to South Africa, to the epicenter of the global HIV and TB epidemics in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. There, they captured images and stories of those at the forefront of CDC’s global response as part of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR)—individuals whose efforts and innovations are helping to transform these epidemics.
