Polio Campaigns in Africa

We have made great achievements in global immunizations, specifically with polio eradication. In 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries, and in 2016 there were only 27 cases worldwide concentrated in the endemic countries of countries of Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan, which equates to a 99 percent reduction of this crippling disease.

In 2016, there were only four cases of wild poliovirus in sub-Saharan Africa, all detected in Nigeria, the last polio-endemic country in Africa. In an effort to reach and protect children not reached by routine immunization services, oral polio immunization campaigns are being conducted in several African countries, with support from technical staff from CDC’s Global Immunization Division. The photos below are from polio immunization campaigns conducted in Africa from 2015 -2016.
