“CDC has been a successful role model for National Public Health Institutes, emphasizing science, service, prevention, and surveillance. Its efforts over the years, including its support of IANPHI’s programs, have strengthened public health globally and promoted best practices.”

Jeffrey P. Koplan, MD, MPH
Former Director of CDC and co-founder of IANPHI

Since 2011, CDC has helped develop and strengthen National Public Health Institutes (NPHI) in more than 30 countries. In 2021, CDC is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its NPHI Program.

NPHIs are government-based agencies that serve as homes to organize and link a country’s public health activities under one “roof,” much like CDC is for the United States. NPHIs provide national leadership for public health. They coordinate and lead efforts to promote health and more effectively prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats.

CDC’s NPHI-specific support helps amplify other CDC and partner investments as NPHIs work to improve connections throughout the public health system.  Reflecting over the past decade and looking forward to the future, we highlight the program’s growth, achievements, and value to global health security and public health.

Working tirelessly with ministries of health, IANPHI, and other partners amid ongoing public health challenges and shrinking resources, we have much to celebrate. I applaud our CDC NPHI Program team for maintaining laser focus and going the extra mile to ensure this mission-critical program’s success.

Over the past ten years, U.S. CDC’s NPHI Program has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with partners in over thirty countries to develop and strengthen national NPHIs.  We are honored to be a part of this global effort.
