Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of a number of microcytes, or small sized erythrocytes. One is highlighted with an arrowhead. Microcytic anemia can be caused by an iron deficiency, thalassemia, or abnormalities of iron metabolism.
