OD2A: Prevention
A prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) is an electronic database that tracks controlled substance prescriptions in a state. PDMPs can provide health authorities timely information about prescribing and patient behaviors that contribute to the epidemic and facilitate a nimble and targeted response.
OD2A jurisdictions work collaboratively with CDC to implement locally relevant prevention activities that align to each of the overarching OD2A strategies. Using current research and surveillance data, OD2A jurisdictions translate overdose data into action through prevention programs. Some examples of prevention program activities include:
- Strengthening prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs)
- Improving partnerships between state and local health departments and organizations
- Establishing programs for linking people to care and treatment
- Improving provider and health system support
Some jurisdictions also choose to focus on other optional prevention strategies. These include:
- Improving partnerships with public safety groups and first responders
- Empowering people who use drugs to make safer choices
- Developing other innovative prevention programs tailored to the jurisdiction’s needs
