Case #84 - May, 2002

Several children from the same day care center developed diarrhea. The images below were made from modified acid-fast stained stool specimens collected from the children (Figures A and B). The objects seen measured 4.5 to 5.5 µm in diameter. What is your diagnosis? Based on what criteria?

Answer to Case #84

This was a case of cryptosporidiosis caused by Cryptosporidium sp. Diagnostic features observed included:

  • the size of the oocysts (4 to 6 µm), which was consistent with Cryptosporidium spp.
  • the presence of sporozoites in some of the oocysts shown in Figure B.
