Making the Case for DSMES to Employers and Insurers

State health departments can convene their diabetes councils or partner networks to inform and educate employers and insurers on the benefits of DSMES and encourage coverage. Employers benefit through improved employee productivity and reduced health care costs.

Employers are eager to hear that insurers have strategies to address the rising costs of diabetes. Encourage employers to talk with their insurance carriers at their next review of benefits about adding DSMES as part of the employee health benefits package. Insurers are encouraged to cover ADA-recognized or AADE-accredited DSMES services for their members with diabetes.
