Ellsworth Campbell, MS, developed the Introduction to MicrobeTrace for the COVID-19 Genomic Epidemiology Toolkit. This material helps epidemiologists and bioinformaticians explore integrated epidemiologic and genomic data arising from COVID-19 outbreak investigations.

As a computational biologist, Mr. Campbell leads the development of MicrobeTrace, a data visualization tool built at CDC for outbreak response. He also leads the Bioinformatics Activity in the Molecular Epidemiology and Bioinformatics Team of the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention’s Laboratory Branch.

His primary research interests are related to agent-based modeling of infectious diseases, transmission network analysis, and data visualization. He received his BS in Human Biology and MS in Ecology, Behavior and Evolution from the University of California at San Diego. He pursued a PhD at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Pennsylvania State before joining the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Applied public health is an inherently data-driven process that can be made intuitive and engaging with visualization tools. We intend for the modules focused on data integration and visualization to help you give stories and life to your data, beyond the spreadsheets that contain them.”
