Ready to Go begins to tell the story of the Public Health Advisor. It is written for several audiences: PHAs and their close colleagues, past and current employees of COC, public health employees in state and local governments and ministries of health, students of public health, for those who hope to make a contribution through public service and might consider such an unusual and rewarding career in public health, and for the citizen interested in our nation’s public health system.
Since their beginnings PHAs have decidedly
contributed to the public health infrastructures of local and
state health departments, and they have served the hierarchy
of CDC with distinction. Public Health Advisors have been detailed
throughout the world to eradicate smallpox, measles, and polio
and to address a host of other diseases and conditions. They
are among the first responders in > times
of public health crisis or humanitarian disaster. Though PHAs took
various career paths, each Public Health Advisor was traditionally
equipped with an accrual of field and operational experiences,
making them invaluable to CDC.
The story begins and ends with an experiment.
It is told for the benefit of history on behalf of the women
and men who call themselves Public Health Advisors. PHAs are
not the type to write their histories or "toot their own horns," though
some are master storytellers. Some such stories grace these pages
while others are best told in private company, but all should
eventually be told because they shed light on this unique and
inimitable public health worker.
