Increase in Vibrio parahaemolyticus illnesses associated with consumption of shellfish from several Atlantic coast harvest areas, United States, 2013

Laboratory Guidance

Diagnosis of Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection is confirmed by isolation of the bacteria.  CDC recommends the use of selective media, such as thiosulfate citrate bile-salts (TCBS) agar, for examining stool specimens.
