Vaccination Coverage and Surveillance:

School and Childcare Assessment Activities

Current Projects

School Requirement

Each year, states and other grantees are asked to provide an update of any changes in child care and school entry vaccination requirements. This annual update reflects state laws, regulations, or rules that impose vaccination requirements for enrollment and attendance in child care facilities, kindergartens, middle schools, and colleges.  Allowable vaccination exemptions are included.

Coverage Assessments and Exemptions

Each year, grantees that receive funding from CDC are required to submit an assessment of the vaccination status of kindergarten children. These reports are due on April 30th each year. In addition to reporting the status of vaccination of the children, the grantees also report the number of children whose parents have chosen a vaccination excemption for them.

Kindergarten Vaccination Coverage & Exemption Monitoring Best Practices

CDC’s aim is to achieve valid and reliable estimates of state and local vaccination coverage and school exemption rates through a uniform monitoring system across state and local immunization programs as well as to identify and implement strategies to address current barriers to achieve high coverage. The goal of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) -317 “Best Practices” is to understand how state and local immunization programs monitor vaccination coverage and school exemptions among kindergarteners. Such information will be gathered via a national grantee survey of current state and local monitoring systems. The data gathered will be used to develop a set of “best practices” for collecting, using, and reporting kindergarten coverage and exemption data with guidelines for implementation.
