State of the World's Vaccines and Immunizations NEW Oct 2009

Increased immunization coverage around the world is a key reason why the number of children dying each year has fallen below 10 million for the first time in documented history.

The State of the World's Vaccines and Immunization, released on October 21, 2009, reports the successes in the overall global immunization effort. Despite great progress, millions of children are at risk, particularly in the poorest nations and communities, where preventable diseases take their deadliest toll.

Vaccinating millions in the Americas and Europe

In April 2009, two regions of the World Health Organization, the Americas and Europe, conducted Vaccination Weeks to vaccinate millions of children, adults, and seniors. The European Immunization Week (EIW)External Web Site Policy was held April 20-26 and the Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA)External Web Site Policy was held April 25-May 2. A news story highlighted the two eventsExternal Web Site Policy on the WHO Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals website. For the first time, the EIW used innovative Internet-based viral techniques and social media to advocate for immunization across Europe. An animated video, posted on YouTube, spread the EIW message virally (online) as well as drove traffic to the EIW website. Social networking sites such as Facebook, BKontakte, and Studivz also were used to reinforce the message.
