Closing Remarks
April 13, 2005: Global Tobacco Epidemic
Dr. Carmona introduced Cristina V. Beato, MD, FAAP, Acting Assistant Secretary for Health, Department of Health and Human Services, to offer some brief closing remarks.
Dr. Beato thanked all the speakers and Committee members for their involvement. She offered thoughts about the U.S. government's role in the global tobacco control epidemic:
- Continue to support strong research to develop effective interventions
- Provide leadership in the translation of science into effective interventions and dissemination of these interventions at all levels
- Monitor and evaluate the impact of our efforts on reducing tobacco use and improving world health
Due to time constraints, Ms. Shelton asked the Committee to participate in a follow–up conference call to discuss recommendations and next steps. She then asked Committee members if there were any final comments before the meeting adjourned.
