CDC Primary Care Educational Modules and Teleconferences

Overview

Linking Public Health Systems and Clinical Health through Residency Program Partnerships

Strong linkages between clinical medicine and public health are vital to increasing the quality of health services, reducing costs, and improving health.

For more information, see the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) report Primary Care and Public Health: Exploring Integration to Improve Population Health.

Strong linkages across clinical medicine and public health are vital to addressing national health priorities at a systemic level. Upcoming health reform-related changes make strong collaboration among clinicians and organizations in these fields even more pressing. To promote these linkages, CDC is collaborating with residency program educators to develop and share resources for delivery in residency training programs. CDC hosts teleconferences, connecting with educators and national experts to share these public health educational tools.

The Residency Program Partnership:

  • Uses existing CDC or HHS publications and products to develop teaching materials for resident education addressing important population and public health issues
  • Promotes understanding of the significant role physicians play in public health
  • Increases the reach and involvement of physicians in national public health initiatives
  • Connects and fosters relationships between physicians and local and state public health professionals

The Million Hearts Initiative, which is co-led by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and CDC, is the focus of the spring 2012 teleconferences among CDC staff and residency program educators. Topics include:

  • Million Hearts Initiative
  • Tobacco Use Prevention
  • Blood Pressure Monitoring and Control

CDC's Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support (OSTLTS) is collaborating with CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control to develop and deliver these educational resources.
