Partner description

The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB), a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to promoting and protecting the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of all public health departments in the United States. PHAB will be the first in the country to administer accreditation services for public health departments. A focus on quality improvement is new for public health and will be transformational in the future.

Selected OSTLTS-funded projects

  • National, voluntary public health accreditation program: The long-term overarching goal of the program is to protect and improve the public’s health through improved quality and performance of state, local, territorial, and tribal public health departments. PHAB was established specifically to develop and implement a national, voluntary public health accreditation program. The focus for this year of the cooperative agreement is on revisions of the standards, measures, and accreditation process based on the beta test and other feedback in preparation for the final program launch in the fall of 2011. The first few months of the new grant period will be dedicated to disseminating all aspects of the accreditation program, including standards and measures, documentation guidance, scoring and weighting, accreditation process, and fees. PHAB will continue to work on the Think Tanks, which will result in final reports with recommendations for consideration in the program launch as well as in subsequent revisions going forward. PHAB has awarded a contract for the development of an accreditation information system to support the program. The launch of the information system will accompany the launch of the accreditation program. PHAB will also begin its own educational services to support applicants through the process.
