National Leadership Academy for the Public's Health

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strives to empower public health professionals with the tools to improve public health practice within their jurisdictions. To support this mission, CDC's Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support has entered into a cooperative agreement with the Public Health Institute's Center for Health Leadership and Practice to launch the National Leadership Academy for the Public's Health (NLAPH).

NLAPH is an applied leadership training program that enables multi-sector jurisdictional teams to address public health problems within their communities through team-identified community health improvement projects.

Program Goals

  • Educate stakeholders about evidence-based policies
  • Drive the adoption of evidence-based practices in communities
  • Better align medicine and public health
  • Improve health outcomes in our nation through sustainable systems change

Teams


The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans, has regional offices across the country to serve as a gateway through which communities and individual citizens can interact with the department.

Teams were selected through an open and competitive process, resulting in the selection of 20 sites with teams of four people at each site.

The 2012 cohort (selected in February 2012) is geographically and culturally diverse with representation from a tribal community, as well as rural and urban areas. Participating states include Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Louisiana, Nebraska, Arizona, California, and Idaho. Teams will address a variety of topics:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic disease prevention
  • Immunizations
  • Infant mortality
  • Obesity
  • Public health preparedness
  • Substance abuse

Training

Each community-based team receives leadership training and coaching from national experts and through collaboration with other teams via webinars, retreats, and networking. The core curriculum includes two program tracks:

  • Leadership – Training elements include personal and collaborative leadership and the progression to multi-sector and meta-leadership
  • Policy Education and Systems Change – Training emphasizes designing and implementing a project grounded in community priorities and evolving from team-based collaborative work to more robust systems change
