Steps to a Healthier DeKalb County

The Steps Program funds states, cities, and tribal entities to implement community-based chronic disease prevention efforts that are focused on reducing the burden of obesity, diabetes, and asthma and addressing three related risk factors: physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use.

Project Area

  • Southern and southeastern parts of DeKalb County with a population of 327,155.
  • Includes the municipalities of Avondale Estates, Lithonia, Pine Lake and Stone Mountain.

Demographics of Project Area

  • Includes 63,438 public school students in 49 elementary, 12 middle and 12 high schools.
  • 86% of residents are African American.
  • 41% of families are headed by single female parents.
  • 10% of residents live below the poverty line.
  • 46% of students are eligible for the free and reduced price lunch program.

Target Populations

  • African American youth and adults.

Steps Activities

Community

  • Over $439,000 distributed through community grants and partnerships
  • Small Steps, Big Rewards Senior Program at senior centers to help prevent type 2 diabetes
  • “Coach Approach Fitness Program” for obese adults
  •  “Not in Mama’s Kitchen” secondhand smoke awareness campaign for African-American youth

School-based

  • Almost $192,000 to DeKalb County School System to implement nutrition & physical activity programs
  • Fitnessgram/Activitygram® program giving individual student assessment of fitness and activity levels
  • Train-the-trainer asthma management program for school nurses

Policy

  • Education on benefits of 100% smoke-free public places in all DeKalb County municipalities

Workplace

  • Worksite wellness surveys in 100 businesses assessing current worksite health promotion
  • Physical activity program at three worksites impacting at least 850 employees

Health Care Settings

  • Health disparities symposium for community members and primary care physicians
  • Health care provider training about the benefits of incorporating prevention into medical practice
