Target Populations and Location

Mothers and parents with children under 5 years old in low income households, health providers, educators, and community based organizations in Dar es Salaam.

Future plans include an expansion to rural and low-income communities.

Project Implementation Date

July 2002

Project Design

Conducted needs and quality assessment, identified local manufacturer (TIL), developed brand, and produced promotional items and educational materials.

Launched jointly by PSI, Ministry of Health, and TIL (commercial manufacturer) as a pilot in Dar es Salaam in July 2002.

Sensitized community, established distribution network, and conducted educational and promotional activities

Established standard category, and became a licensed product in Tanzania.

Intervention Elements

WaterGuard, sodium hypochlorite solution, sold in 250 ml bottles.

Social marketing campaign.

Project Successes

Sold 149,234 bottles in the first year.

WaterGuard is available in 80% of pharmacies and 20% of other retail outlets.

Donated 100,000 bottles to Zanzibar during cholera outbreak late in 2002.

Partnership building: 1) Established working relationship with commercial manufacturer, and 2) Integrating WaterGuard into the district and community health strategies.

WaterGuard is a cost recovery product.
