Target Populations and Location

  • The primary target population is rural women with children under 5.
  • While Sûr'Eau has been promoted via mass media and distributed nationwide, the bulk of the grass-roots communication efforts focused on the provinces of Gikongoro in the South and Gisenyi in the North-West.

Project Design

  • Picture of Sûr'Eau sodium hypochlorite solution.Make Sûr'Eau accessible in the commercial distribution network and community-based structures nationwide.

  • Increase knowledge of the link between drinking water contamination and diarrheal disease among parents with children under 5.

  • Create demand for Sûr'Eau through mass and mid-level media communications and targeted education sessions for women and men of reproductive age.

  • Promote consistent and correct use of Sûr'Eau.

Intervention Elements

  • Sûr'Eau, sodium hypochlorite solution, sold in 250 ml bottles.

  • Social marketing campaign.
  • Picture of Sûr'Eau promotional event.

Project Successes

  • In September 2002, in collaboration with World Relief, distribution of Sûr’Eau accompanied with hygiene education helped prevent a cholera outbreak in Cyangugu province.

  • A manual for trainers was developed.

  • 104 Health Animators and 25 nurses were trained in the three pilot 'health' districts.

  • PSI has collaborated with Child Survival partners, other local associations, and NGO partners.

  • Sales of Sûr'Eau are strong (see figure below).

  • Sûr'Eau is a cost recovery product.
