Target Populations and Location

Parents with children under five years, primarily in low income urban and peri-urban areas.

Expanded impact activities are being implemented in Cinkansé, an area reported to have cholera cases on an annual basis.

Project Implementation Date

February 2004

Project Design

This project started with social marketing in Ouagadougou, the capital city.

Social marketing and interpersonal communication activities have since expanded to Cinkansé, a cholera-prone area in the south-east of the country.

Nationwide distribution and mass media advertising began as of April 2004.

An additional strategy is the implementation of the Safe Water System in schools.

Burkina LabelIntervention Elements

Sodium hypochlorite disinfectant produced locally by Laboratoire Aina. The brand name is Sūr'Eau.

Locally available plastic 20-liter jerry cans for water storage.

Social marketing of Sūr'Eau at a subsidized price.

Project Successes

4,000 bottles sold in the first two months of project activities.

Informal studies conducted in Ouagadougou show brand awareness at 35% after two months of mass media communication activities.

Sūr'Eau being sold in a boutique in Ouagadougou.
