CDC conducted feasibility assessment in May 2002
Sodium hypochlorite is produced locally by a plastics
and chemicals firm
PSI conducts social marketing, and provides training
for behavior change communication through community
health workers, women’s groups, and religious
leaders
PSI is working with governmental and non-governmental
partners to distribute SWS and hygiene kits to pregnant
women seeking antenatal care, in order to motivate
behavior change at a critical time in their lives

Project Successes
168,000 bottles of hypochlorite sold as of December
2004
As of August 2004, 10000 pregnant women have received
SWS and hygiene kits and learned how to use these
simple technologies to protect their families
The project continues to expand throughout Afghanistan
to meet the population’s needs
