Safe Water System (SWS) - Who is the Safe Water System For?
Woman standing next to excavated city water pipe, which has been punctured to create a clandestine water supply in Lima, Peru.Ideally, every home in the world would have an adequate, safe supply of drinking water piped directly to their home. However, 1.1 billion people currently lack access to an improved water supply, and many more gather water from improved sources and then store it unsafely in their homes. The Safe Water System was designed to provide safe drinking water for populations who, currently, can only obtain their water from the following sources:
arrow Surface water sources such as rivers or lakes
arrow Groundwater wells that are potentially contaminated, particularly open shallow wells
arrow Piped systems in which the water is inadequately treated or flow is intermittent, allowing contamination through leaks where pipes are connected
arrow Piped water systems in which intermittent flow requires households to store water
  arrow Water tankers
arrow Water vendors whose source of water is not safe or whose tanker or storage tank is not likely to be clean

Other potential target populations are in areas where water collection containers are not cleaned before filling them with water or wide-mouth containers are used to collect and store water. Disinfection of the source water may not always be necessary in these cases (e.g., if the source water is safe) but the practice of disinfection prevents recontamination of water in the home and supports hygiene improvements in the home.
