Prenatal Smoking Data Book: How to Interpret State Highlights


The numbered items below correspond to numbers on the "Any State" figures and tables.

  1. Number of women in the state reporting smoking during their pregnancy in 1999 (data source: birth certificates).

  2. Mean (average) percentage of women in all states reporting smoking anytime during pregnancy in 1999 (data source: birth certificates).

  3. Percentage of women in the state reporting that they smoked during their pregnancy in 1999 (data source: birth certificates).

  4. Percentage of women in the state reporting that they smoked during their pregnancy in 1999, by race/ethnicity, age, and education (data source: birth certificates).
  5. Percentage of low birth weight infants in the state in 1999, by mother's smoking status (data source: birth certificates).

  6. Percentage of women reporting that they smoked during the last 3 months of their pregnancy, based on 1998 PRAMS data for the state.
     
  7. Percentage of women in the state reporting that they smoked during their pregnancy, by race/ethnicity, age, and education (data source: PRAMS). The definitions of these categories are the same as those used for birth certificates.

  8. Number of SIDS deaths in the state in 1997 related to smoking by pregnant women.
     
  9. Total years of potential years of life lost due to smoking-attributable SIDS deaths in 1997, based on life expectancy of infants born that year.

  10. Percentage of all babies born in the state in 1997 with low birth weight (< 2500 grams) attributable to smoking.

  14. Total smoking-attributable neonatal dollars spent for care of infants born in the state in 1997.

  15. Total number of live births in the state in 1999 (data source: birth certificates).

  16. Mean birth weight in grams of all infants born live in the state in 1999 (data source: birth certificates).

  17. Percentage of all infants born live in the state in 1999 with a birth weight less than 2500 grams (data source: birth certificates).

  18. Percentage of all live births in 1998 for which the mother participated in the Women, Infant, and Children's (WIC) program for those deemed to be at nutritional risk (data source: PRAMS).

  19. Percentage of all live births in 1999 for which the mother received prenatal care during the first trimester of pregnancy (data source: birth certificates).

  29. Whether smoking was banned or restricted in home-based day care centers in the state in 2001.

  30. Scheduled tobacco settlement payment to each state in 2001.

  31. Settlement dollars each state allocated directly to tobacco control programs in 2001.

  32. Total amount of funding allocated for tobacco control in each state in 2001.

  33. Whether the state screens pregnant maternal and child health (MCH) clients for smoking status.

  34. Whether the state offers smoking cessation counseling to pregnant MCH clients.

  35. Whether the state provides brochures, videos, or other educational materials on the effects of smoking to pregnant MCH clients.

  36. Whether media campaigns are targeted to pregnant women who smoke.

  37. Whether there are smoking cessation education/training programs for MCH professionals or providers.

  38. Whether the state's Medicaid program reimburses patients for prenatal smoking cessation interventions.
