Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship (PMR/F)

Application Information

Residency Requirement Highlights

Physicians with ACGME-accredited postgraduate clinical training must:

  • Have a current, full, and unrestricted U.S. medical license
  • Have an MPH that meets ACGME requirements, or equivalent (or qualify for MPH sponsorship)
  • Be willing to relocate
  • Be willing to commit to a 2-year, full time program (or for 1 year if qualified)

 

Fellowship Requirements Highlights

Veterinarians, dentists, registered nurses, physician assistants, or international medical graduates (physicians) without ACGME- or AOA-accredited postgraduate clinical training must:

  • Have a current, full, and unrestricted U.S. license (exceptions are allowed for international medical graduates)
  • Have an MPH or equivalent degree
  • Be willing to relocate
  • Be willing to commit to a 1-year, full time program

Interviews in Atlanta, Georgia, for qualified applicants (candidates are responsible for their own travel expenses)

Application Process

The application period has closed.

 

Applicants without EIS training

Include in your personal statement your experience in each of these areas:

  • Conducted or participated in a field investigation of a potentially serious public health problem requiring a rapid response
  • Designed, conducted, and interpreted an epidemiologic analysis on public health data
  • Designed, implemented, or evaluated a public health surveillance system
  • Written and submitted a scientific manuscript for a peer-reviewed journal (first authorship strongly recommended)
  • Gave an oral presentation at a national or international scientific meeting
  • Responded appropriately to written or oral public health inquiries

 

Supporting Documents

Mail the following supporting documents to the PMR/F office.

Letters of Recommendation

  • Three letters of recommendation are required
  • Select persons who are familiar with the quality of your work
  • Applicants in CDC-sponsored state or local assignments must submit recommendations from both local and CDC supervisors
  • Provide the writers with a copy of the Reference Letter Instructions (3 pages; 28 KB)
  • Letters must be submitted in English
  • Letters must be specific to your application and dated within 3 months of the application

Documentation of Clinical Training (Residency Applicants Only)

  • Submit a copy of certificates or letters from sponsoring institutions verifying completion of ACGME-accredited postgraduate clinical training

Transcripts

  • Submit official transcripts for all degrees earned since high school
  • If transcripts are not issued by a U.S. institution, other proof of degree completion (e.g., a diploma) must also be submitted — transcripts and proof of degree completion must be translated into English
  • High school transcripts are not required

U.S. Clinical License

  • Submit proof of a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice your qualifying clinical specialty in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
  • International medical graduates (physicians) applying to the fellowship are exempt

Submission of Supporting Documents

Mail supporting documents early.

  • All mail delivery to the CDC goes to a central mail facility before being delivered to the PMR/F office
  • We strongly suggest sending supporting documents via mail or courier that provides tracking services
  • Faxes or e-mails are not accepted
