Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship (PMR/F)

More about the Programs

The residency (PMR) and the fellowship (PMF) both provide service, training, and supervised on-the-job learning in public health and preventive medicine practice.

Our programs prepare clinicians for leadership roles in public health and general preventive medicine at the federal, state or local levels.

Our programs offer:

  • Mentoring by experienced public health practitioners
  • Hands-on experience in public health and preventive medicine practice
  • Classroom training to enhance professional growth
  • MPH coursework for select physicians in PMR

As a resident or fellow, you will be eligible for the following:

    Salary and benefits
  • Moving expenses
  • Travel to PMR/F-sponsored training
  • Tuition support for an MPH degree for residents (as needed)

Qualified applicants interested in the “complementary pathway to board exam certification” (see the American Board of Preventive Medicine Certification Requirements webpage) must have completed an-ACGME accredited residency in another specialty and have an MPH or equivalent degree per ACGME.  Applicants are encouraged to speak directly with the PMR staff at 404-498-6140.

Relocation Potential

You must be willing to relocate. Because our training programs emphasize experience at both federal and state or local  levels, residents and fellows are required to change assignments in the program.

Residents and fellows with public health experience at a state or local health department will be assigned to a CDC location. Those with experience at the federal level will be assigned to a state or local health department.

Professional Growth

PMR/F programs emphasize professional growth through hands-on experience and classroom training in many areas:

  • Leadership
  • Management
  • Policy development
  • Program development, implementation, and evaluation
  • Translation of clinical science and epidemiology into public health and preventive medicine practice

Hands-On Opportunities

Residents and fellows participate in a full range of activities to help them understand and manage the many factors that influence public health practice.

Previous opportunities have included:

  • Researching and drafting language for legislative issues
  • Participating in and evaluating the agency’s emergency response efforts
  • Conducting focus groups with stakeholders to design a community intervention project
  • Serving as medical director while designing and establishing a mental health clinic for victims of trauma and torture
